Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father and a white mother. She was raised primarily with her mom's family. She said that the color of her skin was a reason why she was at odds with her peers as a child. [3] Her parents struggled financially and were constantly moving, relocating their homes sixteen times to follow her father's work. Russell expressed her feelings about how despite this hardship, Russell said that she was always interested in creativity as a child. She wanted to be a dancer, and later to become an artist. Russell was just 18 when she began her first acting class. She used her savings from work to purchase a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. As her funds ran out then she would go back home to work until she earned enough to audition again. The process went on for four years until she was offered her first big TV job.
