
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter Josephine who is a laboratory technician and John Ormond. She is the fifth of five children to her parents. Her early performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted the attention of many. She then attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After one year of art school , she was moved to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she attended until 1988, when she graduated. Ormond first made an appearance in British television in the 1989 drama Traffik that focused on the illegal heroin trade that flows from the far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin dependent daughter of the character and was also a Home Office minister working to combat the importation of heroin. It was the first time Ormond had a role and was praised by the critics as a success.
